As temperatures begin to drop, September is an ideal time to complete a few simple exterior maintenance checks before Maine's wet and cold weather arrives.
The Tip: Walk around your property and inspect the roof, gutters, downspouts, exterior faucets, windows, and doors. Clear leaves and debris from gutters and make sure downspouts direct water away from the foundation.
Don't Forget: Disconnect garden hoses from exterior faucets before freezing temperatures arrive. If your property has exposed plumbing, make sure it is properly protected.
The Win: Taking care of these small items now can help prevent water intrusion, frozen pipes, and costly repairs later in the season.
A few hours of preventative maintenance in September can make a big difference once winter arrives.

Long before Lewiston became the city we know today, the Androscoggin River was at the center of its growth.
A timber dam was built at the falls around 1808–1809, and by 1809 Michael Little had constructed a large wooden building containing saw, grist, and fulling mills. Later, Boston investors helped finance the canal system and textile mills that transformed Lewiston into an industrial center.
The city's historic canal and mill system remains one of the defining features of Lewiston's industrial heritage. The Lewiston Mills and Water Power System Historic District includes 165 historic resources, including six remaining mill complexes and the power canal system.
So the next time you walk along the canals, you're seeing part of the infrastructure that helped turn Lewiston into one of Northern New England's major textile centers.
